Not all animals are treated equally. Sad to say, lots of stray cats and their tiny kitty litters are left to fend for themselves. But it would seem that one animal lover from Israel found a bunch of kittens abandoned on the side of the road, and his heart couldn’t handle leaving them there to fend for themselves. He took them to the vet to see if they could do anything for the poor creatures who looked like they were about to die.
But what he was soon going to discover was that they were no ordinary cats, and because of his kindness, these tiny creatures were given the best chance of survival they were ever going to get.
On His Way To Work
Hamdan Shibli, an 18-year old from Israel, was on his way to work when he noticed something on the side of the road. Two little kittens happened to be cuddling together, thin and completely alone.
Hamdan began to search for their mom, hoping that she might be somewhere nearby. But as he continued to look, he couldn’t find her anywhere. He decided that the kittens were in a perilous location, and that if they were going to have a chance of survival, they needed to be put in another area.
With his mind made up, he moved the duo to a safer area, thinking that at least should they wander from their spot, they won’t accidentally walk onto the road and get accidentally ran over. He was hoping that their mom would come back soon enough to take care of them. But sadly, that just wouldn’t be the case.
As Hamdan moved them to a safer location, he would be surprised upon finding a third kitten. It would seem that this little guy was even worse off than the first two. The tiny little cat looked completely weak and on the verge of death.
Taking A Photo
He left the kittens in a bushier area, hoping that their mom had just gone out to get some food for them. But he also decided to take a picture of the three kittens and post it online to see if anyone knew anything about them. But he would end up getting the shock of his life. Not only were these three tiny kittens not regular cats, they were actually jungle cats.
Apparently, jungle cats happen to be considered ‘a type of large cat native to Asia.’ Not only were they not the kind of pets you could keep at home, but while they were not on the endangered species list, there was only a mere 600 of them in Israel, not much in comparison to other animals.
Going Back For Them
Once he realized what kind of felines they were, Hamdan decided to head back to where they were located, praying they were still there. Not only was one of the kittens in grave danger of dying, if these cats had any chance to live, he knew he needed to try to do whatever he could to give them a fighting chance.
Quickly heading back to the same area he had left them, he was ecstatic to find them still in the same spot. It would seem that the poor little kittens didn’t know what to do. And since their mother was still nowhere to be found, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Bringing Them To The Vet
Thankfully, Hamdan knew just where to bring the three frail cats. He gathered them all up in a basket and headed straight to an emergency animal clinic. And what they were going to tell him was also going to have him thoroughly surprised once more.
While Hamdan thought that the three kittens he had rescued from the side of the road were just regular house cats, they were actually jungle cats. And while they don’t grow too large, they are still wild animals that are meant to live outdoors, in grasslands and other swampy areas.
Barely Five Weeks Old
The tiny kittens were barely five weeks in age. Normally, these types of cats remain in the care of their mom until this time, drinking milk for their sustenance. It is at this age that they are only learning how to fend for themselves.
The animal doctor would tell Hamdan that these types of cats still don’t know how to feed themselves. Not only did they still need their mom’s milk, they were still in the process of watching how to get food for themselves. They could only wonder that something had unfortunately happened to the mom, which is why they had been abandoned in the first place.
They Were Covered In Ticks
To make matters worse, all three of kittens were covered in an incredible amount of ticks. They were truly in a sorry state, and if Hamdan hadn’t found them when he did, they would have surely died just a few days after.
The veterinary clinic went into immediate action to do what they could for the kittens. They assessed their physical state and found that not only were their bodies covered in an immense amount of ticks, they were also horribly dehydrated and basically starving.
The Third Kitten Died
Wistfully, the third kitten that Hamdan had found was too far gone and ended up dying in the clinic. Sadly, his little body was so battered that it just couldn’t get through the next couple of hours as the vets attempted to nurse the three cats back to health. Hamdan felt guilty about it, but at least the two other kittens still had a chance of life.
While the vet Hamdan brought the cats to originally, did what he could, he wasn’t one that could deal with their complete care. So they decided that if the other two were going to be able to make it, they needed to go somewhere else, the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo.
Specializing In Wild Animals
The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo obviously specialized in wild animals, and the doctors there knew that in order for them to have a better chance at treating the animals, they needed to study up on this particular type of jungle cat to make sure that they were giving them exactly what they needed to survive.
The doctors were able to figure out that the cats were both male. They also really needed to find a way to not only get some vitamins and nutrients into their systems, but they needed to figure out that best way to feed them as well.
Since they didn’t have the mom around to give them her milk, the animal doctors managed to use a milk substitute and feed them with a syringe. The main goal in the very beginning was to make sure that they managed to get the cats’ weight up, as well as rehydrate them.
Eventually, as the days passed, the two male felines were able to eat solid food. Not only were they gaining back their strength, but they were beginning to gain the weight they needed and grow bigger as well, which would be the only way they would ever have a chance to make it in the wild if they would be able to ever release them.
Their Appetites Grew
Soon enough, the cats were not only gaining weight, their appetites grew, as well as their penchant for moving around quite a bit too. The doctors also knew that they couldn’t domesticate the kittens too much, for if they did, there was no way that they would ever be able to release them back into their natural habitat.
If these cats were ever going to be able to endure in the wild, they needed to make sure that they could give them enough of a ‘jungle feel’ during their rehabilitation. Such cats have a natural desire to run wild and free, so the medical team in the veterinarian clinic did whatever they could to allow them that ‘freedom.’
Giving Them Rare Meat
Like most wild animals, the two kittens enjoyed the taste of raw meat, as it should be. The more meat they were given, the more they wanted. They never passed up on the opportunity to eat meat when it was given to them, something that would surely help them when they were finally released.
Luckily, as each day passed, these two kittens would grow stronger and feistier. The vets were able to observe that the brothers no longer cowered in fear when approached, nor were they just sitting together in their cage as they watched what was going on around them.
No More Human Interaction
Now the zoo had to make sure that the two growing jungle cats would be able to make it on their own. Their next step was to put the cats in a room that was fabricated to make it seem like they were in the wild. This also meant that they had to limit their interaction with humans.
Here, the medical team put in hidden cameras in their new habitat so they could watch how the two brothers would fend for themselves. They had to see if they would they be able to survive on their own, if they would be able to hunt for food, and if they could basically fend for themselves, especially from possible danger.
To test out their hunting skills, the medical team put small rodents inside the room the cats were now living in. This way, the slowly growing jungle cats could test out their skills against actual living creatures.
At the moment, the two growing jungle cats are still being observed by the zoo staff. The conclusion so far is that they are not exactly ready yet to be on their own. But with every day that passes, their futures look quite promising.
